My day has finally come. I turned on my phone this morning and HE appeared. I had to run out and get it.

Turned out to be a female, but still. My #1 favorite Pokemon has finally arrived. Totodile <3 This almost makes up for the sting of NEVER being able to find a Clefairy, even when an event was made to increase their spawn rates.

I wanna make it my buddy, but there are many others that I should prioritize in the candy department. I'm a short way away from getting Magnemite to evolve, as well as Machoke, Grimer, Voltorb and Diglett.

WatchMojo is known to do anime related videos very poorly, not putting a whole lot of research into their subject matter. Now they've done one on Magical Girl shows.

I have to say I'm surprised by the variety counted here. This is so much better than that poll in Japan a few years back where the entire list was dominated by Nanoha and Madoka characters. One major flaw though is the exclusion of witches, since shows like Ojamajo Doremi very much count as magical girl shows.

Ugh. That dub for CCS is painful. Sakura sounds exactly like every soulless "little girl" voice in an anime dub ever. Still. I'm definitely okay with her position on the ranking. Although I definitely think she should have been higher than Sailor Moon. I kinda expected SM to be #1 though, being the most famous title in the genre and everyone's go-to comparison for anything magical girl.

Not one Precure character though? I'd say I'm surprised, but Precure must not be all that well known in the west.

So I know I'm late to respond to this but my God this video was dumb.

So they're sponsored by Crunchyroll... yet they use fansubbed clips from Shugo Chara which you can watch legally on Crunchyroll. Good job as always Watchmojo.

They're also also really inconsistent when it comes to picking dubs or subs. First I thought they might have decided based on the quality of the dub but the fact that they used a clip from Sentai's awful Prisma Illya dub tells me that's probably not the case.

Granted Watchmojo are typically really bad with anime videos since their writers don't actually know anything about anime. I remember one of their videos where they talked about worst dubs bringing up how Negima got three dubs by 'Funimation, Xebec and Shaft' (You know, the animation studios). Also one of the list items was a fandub.

For my contribution to this stupid holiday that's more memorable to me as Sakura Kinomoto's birthday, I have decided to do the reverse of what I usually do, and list things that I don't find completely terrible in my least favorite anime. This will only be about the main anime series, not spinoff manga or movies.

10 ) Tatsuya Kaname.
Madoka's little brother is cute as frickin' sin. The only character that made me go "d'aww" in the main series. While I would have liked to see more of him, I'm glad he didn't get wrapped up in the show's miserable plot.

9 ) The old timey film projector thing.
The first and last thing we see in this anime is an effect reminiscent of old film reels. I don't really get the point, especially since this anime takes place in a pretty modern era, but I can give Shaft some style points.

8 ) The ending is NOT a deus ex machina.
I really don't get why people claim this. The ending didn't really come out of nowhere. More the opposite. It was said quite a while back that Madoka had amazing potential as a meguca, to the point of reality warping abilities. And considering how hopeless the situation looked as of episode 10, the show seemed like it would only go two ways, total misery grimdark everyone dies ending, or Madoka's wish solving the crisis.

7 ) Yuki Kajiura does what she does best.
While I think her music is repetitive and sounds the same in various shows, if you ever need someone to do ominous Gothic music with chanting in a fictitious language, she's #1. While I did get really tired of hearing Sis Puella Magica a thousand times, there are some tracks on the OST that I actually kind of liked. The one played in ep. 4 when Madoka's crying into her eggs and again in ep. 7 when Sayaka is crying on Madoka's shoulder is probably my favorite.

6 ) The Kyouko vs Sayaka fight.
Episode 5 in general is probably my favorite. It gives us a bit of relief from the previous two episodes, helps flesh out Sayaka a little more, and gives us one of the few fights that doesn't come off as just style over substance. Though I think Kyouko's antagonism is overbearing and poorly done, I can appreciate that there's a genuine clash of ideology that gives this fight some actual weight.

5 ) Madoka's costume and weapon.
Even though she doesn't really get to do much with it, I actually kinda like Madoka's frilly pink magical girl costume and rose bow. They're the only things that look and feel like they're actually from a magical girl show. I always disliked how the others use completely mundane, non-magic guns and blades, so Madoka's bow firing glowy energy arrows was actually kind of neat.

4 ) Kyubey's voice.
If you're going to have a character who does almost nothing but info dump, it's best to give them a voice that's really pleasing to the ears. In a show where I can't stand the majority of the protagonist's voices, I was surprised to hear Emiri Katou do so well with Kyubey's voice, more than I can say about her role as the snotty snail loli from Bakemonogatari. And best of all, because Kyubey's face never moves, lip syncing is no issue!

3 ) The Blu Ray enhancements.
Studio Shaft has pretty much coined the term for updating their half-finished animation in the BD release. "Shafting" it's called. And boy did this show need to be Shafted. While some would argue that Mami's room being barren helps drive home how lonely and miserable she is, I could see her gathering lots of material possessions to fill the void, and making her house look so presentable that she'd hope guests would never want to leave.

2 ) The ending TRIED to do something positive.
I can respect that they wanted to convey some kind of message about hope, and that this was their intention from the beginning. Whether it works for me is irrelevant, the point is they get some points for effort. The finale was also the most visually remarkable thing in the show, and by that I mean the only part where the visuals remotely impressed me.

1 ) Genre awareness.
It's always great to hear that someone became a fan of magical girl shows because they watched this show. Even if they didn't become a fan, I can appreciate when they at least give them a fair chance and not write them off as mindless sunshine and rainbows. I've made quite a few friends because of this anime.

I feel like I cheated a little, particularly with 5 and 4, but I honestly couldn't think of ten things I genuinely like about this show.

Honorable mentions include the fan games, The Different Story, Nagisa Momoe, and the fact that this show is NOT Cross Ange!

Disney Channel's current #1 show and that thing I put off for way too long. Now that it's nearing its end (Summer Vacation doesn't last 9 seasons in this show) I finally got around to watching and I have to say I like what I see.

I thought I wouldn't be able to tolerate Mabel, partly because I'm not a fan of her voice, but she's actually not all that annoying. She can be kind of obnoxious, but she also knows when to be serious and sincere. I'm only on the second episode so I haven't seen much, but I recall Mr. Enter praising the "Land Before Swine" episode as an example of how stupid characters (Soos) and jerk characters (Stan) should be written.

Soos by the way is pretty hilarious. I can't really describe it, but it's certainly a step above characters like Patrick Star, who are just a walking punchline and the joke is always "Get it? He's stupid."

So yea, has anyone else been watching this show? Surprised I didn't see a thread here.

So it's been a while since anyone has posted here and now that the show has gone on hiatus for the rest of the year, I think it's time for another round of this.

And of course the #1 word on anyone's mind right now is "Peridot". She's become the focus of a lot of episodes lately, and that's totally fine. While I did prefer her as a cold and almost robotic antagonist, and I feel like her becoming so quirky and dorky is getting out of hand, I don't mind her being more than just an antagonist. It's nice to see her being fleshed out as a character in her own right, and having unique interactions with the main characters, particularly Steven.

The fandom really has a knack for picking up on subtle hints, running with them and deducing them flawlessly. The whole "Pearls are mass-produced servants" thing ended up being so correct I'm wondering if the staff read fan theories and was like "That sounds like something we'd write."

It also served as a really nice contrast to show what Pearl has become, and how much she has achieved despite the label gem society places on her. It also sheds some more light on her flaws, particularly her self-destructive dedication to Rose.

I mentioned that my favorite character constantly changes throughout the show, and I think it's finally time for Steven to take the spot at #1. I'm really liking the way he's being handled as a character. How his ability to feel empathy for Peridot is what leads to her turn-around. He's come so far from being the obnoxious kid who absolutely would not shut up about seeing Opal for the first time.

Then there's Amethyst. I loved the way she was handled in "Cry For Help" but the latest episode soured her for me a bit. "Too Far" treated Peridot like she was the only one in the wrong, when Amethyst was the one egging her own to say a lot of very hurtful things about all of the Crystal Gems. Though to be fair, Amethyst was gearing up for having herself roasted too, it was just bad fortune that her particular weakness (feeling like she's a mistake) was what Peridot ended up bringing up.

Amethyst has always been rather crass and can border on a troll at times, but it seems like she only has empathy for others when it matches her own issues. In Cry For Help for example, she reacts with such understanding to Pearl's situation because it's something she felt. Otherwise she just kinda laughs at everyone's problems.

Garnet's character is one that has confused me for the longest time. I have a hard time pinpointing what her flaws are exactly, and when something comes up (her behavior in Coach Steven) it comes off as a bit jarring. But I think, kinda similar to Amethyst, she doesn't really notice other people's problems unless they directly affect her. Her scene in Friend Ship where she talks about how she doesn't let her problems affect her explains it well. She seems to be the type who bottles up her feelings in order to keep focused on missions. As long as the team functions, little details like how Amethyst is affected by Sardonyx goes unnoticed.

You know what we haven't seen in a while? An actual normal gem monster. I think the documentary episode with Ronaldo is the last time we saw one. Since then it's been fusion mutants, Peridot or nothing at all. Episodes with no fights or antagonist are fine if they give us good character development, which this show has done consistently. I don't even really dislike Connie's mom anymore thanks to how Nightmare Hospital handled her.

So now we have Lavos The Cluster waiting in the core of the Earth to awaken and compared to that, Malachite seems like small potatoes.
