| It's time for that theme song!
Oh good lord. The world cannot measure how much of a Sonic fanatic I was back in my younger, stupider years. Oddly enough I never liked the original game, mainly because my first was Sonic 2 and the original was kind of a downgrade. No Tails, no Spin Dash, No Super Sonic.
The one that really got me into the series though was the combined Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. The stages were so intricate, with multiple paths (some of which only certain characters could access. To this day I'm still finding new things in that game.
I used to think Sonic got the short end of the straw with his Insta-shield, compared to Knuckles's gliding and Tails's flying, but the Insta-shield lets you attack through things that would normally harm a character, like if the enemy has an exhaust flame going or spikes around it.
Then came Sonic Adventure. At the time it was such a game changer, but now I've been spoiled by the more refined jumps to 3D found in Mario and Legend of Zelda. I don't even find either Sonic Adventure fun anymore.
And now I must take a moment to gush about one thing that is still great from those games, Chao Gardens! Just.... <3 Raising your own gooey little alien looking thing that grows and changes depending on the stats you raise, racing them in competitions, loads of fun.
I liked the Sonic Advance Trilogy, Sonic Battle and Sonic Rush/Adventure, but by Sonic Heroes, my faith in the series began to decline. Then Shadow got his own game and I haven't played a new Sonic game since.
Funny thing, I had actually gotten Sonic 2006 for Christmas when it first came out, but I didn't have the system for it. GOOD THING TOO. So many horror stories about how broken that game is, and how long it takes to load.
Things have supposedly gotten better for the blue hedgehog, including bringing back using Super Sonic during actual stages, but I'd probably only ever buy another game if I already had everything else I wanted, and of course had the money to buy it. |

| I actually got into Sonic in High School when I met my (now) best friend. She was a huge fan since her childhood, so to understand it I started paying more attention to the franchise and its many games.
Before her, the only real exposure to Sonic was the 90s animated series (the comedy one, not the super serious one), Sonic Underground and Sonic X (which I'm still amazed is re-running on TV and has been for years now)
So far my favorite game from the franchise is Sonic CD. cuz, DAT. SOUNDTRACK. other reasons too, but I just thought it was more fun that the other early games i had played. (Sad fact = i've never beaten a sonic game all the way through), unless you count Sonic the Fighters
Tails remains my favorite character. Even when I didn't know diddly squat about sonic, cutesy two-tailed nerdy animals will always win my heart.
Overall, I think Sonic's biggest asset is its colorful cast of goofy characters. As much as games like Sonic Heroes stink, I think its kinda neat to play as every character ever. |

| My first Sonic game was Sonic 2. We had it for our Genesis. Sadly I never got to beat it. I would get to the factory (?) level and always died. I then didn't play a Sonic game until Sonic Heroes. I really enjoyed playing that game, but I didn't beat it completely. I then got Sonic and the Secret Ring and Sonic Unleased. Meh. I really didn't care for those game. I feel bad for Sonic. He really struggles transferring into 3D games. |

| Sonic 2 was also my first game, I think. I often wanted to learn the names of the characters, especially the main villain. It wasn't until the Sonic X came did I learn his name and that was about 6 to 7 years after playing the first game.
This was probably done before, but I wonder if anyone thought of crossing Sonic over with Tokyo Mew Mew? |

cuz, DAT. SOUNDTRACK. It's definitely the most unique soundtrack in the entire series. Especially considering the soundtrack is different depending on region. Maybe it's because it's the one I grew up with, but I'm much more fond of the English music than the Japanese music. The Special Stages in that one are also among the most fun to play. |

| Was that last part even necessary? XD Our dark and edgy protagonist everybody. Lately I've been getting back into Sonic games, mostly playing the classics. The newer ones, like Unleashed and Generations have been calling to my broke self. Generations especially because of Classic Sonic. I've found that I enjoy the classics more for their slower pace and exploration, rather than blazing through stages too fast to appreciate them. This however, is complete INSANITY I can barely process what's going on here. Another reason I want to get back into Sonic games... they've started letting you play as Super Sonic again. Usually he's reserved for the final battle, which is fine for Sonic Adventure, but games like Sonic Rush make you work for the emeralds. Sonic Advance 2 is especially horrible when it comes to special stages. You have to... 1 ) Find seven unique ring items scattered throughout stages you're most likely blazing past. 2 ) Get to the end of the stage without dying. 3 ) Play through what is among the most difficult special stages in the franchise. 4 ) Do this for ALL FIVE CHARACTERS. And then you can play the final boss battle as Super Sonic. Speaking of which, I'm pretty disappointed that with the console version of Sonic Generations for 2 reasons. 1 ) Modern Sonic is the same as in Sonic Rush, so both Sonics are 2D side-scrolly. 2 ) You have to earn the emeralds in Special Stages, but no playable Super Sonic. Fortunately the console version of Generations is for PC. All I would need is a Steam Account, and a special controller that can hook into the USB slot. |

| I've been on a weird Sonic binge lately.
I recently re-bought a handful of Sonic games that I used to own, namely both the Rush games and Sonic Heroes, and two that I've never played before, Colors for the Wii and Lost World for the 3ds.
I always liked the Rush games, but I can't decide which one I like more. Rush Adventure gives you more freedom to just go crazy with the boosting ability, whereas the first one puts more bottomless pits around and has a lot more situations where you have to stop and navigate carefully. But I feel like the first Rush was better designed. The states are more memorable, the music stands out more (for better or worse) and the special stages are a ton better.
Speaking of which, Rush and Colors for the DS are the only Sonic games where I don't hate the half pipe style of special stage. The former because using the touch screen is so much easier (as opposed to Heroes where it's difficult just control using the GC joystick) and Colors because they had the brilliant idea to make the pipe see through. Can't tell you how many times I've rounded a curve and smacked right into a spike ball I couldn't see.
I'm looking forward to Lost World for the 3DS for one reason in particular. And unlike Colors Wii and Lost World Wii U, there's no nonsense about coloring 150+ red star rings. |
