For those who don't know, Undertale is an indie game available on Steam. It's kind of an rpg, but kinda not and apparently takes a lot of inspiration from Earthbound (or at least gets compared to it a lot)

The big thing Undertale is known for is that you can go through the entire game without killing a single thing, random encounters, boss battles, you name it. They can all be negotiated through using dialog and dodging attacks for a certain amount of turns, stuff like that.

The part that makes it most un-rpg like is the method in which you avoid enemy attacks. It goes from rpg one second to manic shooter ala Touhou the next, having navigate around attack patterns during the opponent's turn.

A lot of people say that the gameplay is kinda dull, but what really wins people over is the story and characters, and of course the humor. Most of the game is lighthearted and silly, but there are some parts that can get kinda disturbing, ESPECIALLY if you do what is known as the "Genocide Route" where you kill the opponent in every fight you end up in.

Definitely not something I could ever do, especially if I were to grow to like the characters. I haven't even played or watched much of it and I'm already adoring Toriel, otherwise known as "Goat Mom". I probably won't play the game myself, but since so many people are (like Markiplier and Barry & Ross on Steam Train) are playing it I might watch one of those.

Oh God, not this game. 

It started with my boyfriend watching Joel from Vinesauce playing it, and he began telling me about it. Then my cousin got the game and began playing it and told me even more about it, and kept recommending it to me, even though that's really not my type of thing. Then the Tomodachi Life tag on Tumblr became 90% full of Undertale Miis, and I just... I can't escape this game! At all!



In all seriousness, I really have nothing against the game. It sounds adorable, and yes, Toriel is the sweetest thing ever. It's just not the type of thing I see myself playing. My cousin has also stopped recommending the game to me, after I told him the story of how I cried watching Onegai My Melody. The feels would absolutely murder me if I played this.

So I started watching the playthrough of the game on Game Grumps/Steam Train and just as people are saying, the character interactions are fun and cute, but the battles are really dull to watch. At the point that I'm at now it's getting kind of dull for me, possibly because none of the characters I like are involved, but I'll keep going and see if things change.

Never played it or saw someone play it. But the Plaza in Spaltoon has a ton of Undertale memes. It's taking over the net!!

Oooooh the salt this game causes on both sides is delicious.

So the 2015 Game Awards happened and everyone and their grandmother's thought that Undertale would win "Best Indie Game", but instead an awesome thing called Rocket League won. Tumblr exploded with crying over it and people started giving the game negative reviews simply because they thought a game that "gave them feels" deserved it more despite being known for its less than stellar gameplay.

Meanwhile Gamefaqs is doing a poll competition for the best game ever, and people are calling in the troops to get Undertale to win, asking people to vote for it even if they don't think it's the best game, causing a huge stink as it beats games like Super Mario World and Pokemon R/B/Y. Now there's a thousand threads on Gamefaqs whining about fans of that "Social Justice Game" rigging the poll.

Still better than the year that the L block from Tetris won best character.

Oh how I love the saltiness in the video game community. I bet a lot people were pissed off that Splatoon won best multiplayer and shooter.

Best video game of all time?! Oh, please! I'm sure Undertale is a nice game, but calling it the best game of all time is a STRETCH. If anything, the best video game of all time is Super Mario Bros. If it wasn't for that game, the gaming industry wouldn't be where it is today.

Honestly, why do fandoms have to ruin everything? They always take nice things and just...ruin them.

I feel like the title best video game of all time is quite subjective. I was wondering why people on the Pokemon Reddit were asking people to vote for the Gen 1 games. As much as I love Pokemon I really don't think it deserves that title. Especially the Gen 1 games.

Also the Gamefaqs boards can be quite toxic. I used to lurk on the Splatoon board and people were quite nasty with each other. The same goes for the Pokemon ORAS and XY boards. Calling Gen 3 lovers Hoenn Babies. Woah there! Look how mature you are! -_-

Yeah, best game is very objective. I was talking to my boyfriend about this, and he says that Ocarina of Time deserves the title. A poll like that honestly is just a recipe for a bunch of unnecessary drama, though.

Yep those polls are meant to fuel nothing, but salt.

Because it's cool to hate on Nintendo. But whatever. They're missing out on a wonderful game.

Probably the same reason Madoka fans bash traditional magical girl shows. Too "mindless and kiddy" because it doesn't have enough grit and edge. If it's Nintendo, hardcore gamers automatically trash it as being "kiddy".



I.... don't know why I'm honestly surprised. I thought Melee was enough of a monster hit that it'd be winning.

Only the Hero of Time can save us now. (since I highly doubt it'll lost to Mario RPG).
