Localization can be a very unforgiving to the cuter side of video games, case in point is the Panel de Pon series
It's a series of puzzle games, the first being released in 1995 for the Super Famicom (SNES), with its cast of characters being cute fairy magical girls trying to save their land



it made it's way to the U.S., unfortunately, during a time when Nintendo was trying to beef up it's image as a more serious and, arguably, masculine game console compared to SEGA (in hidesight, the 90's console wars are pretty funny)

So instead Panel de Pon got gutten and rebranded as "Tetris Attack" and all of its anime girl characters replaced with....Yoshi?

I've never played Tetris Attack, but from what I've seen vs. what I've played of PnP, it's exactly the same. ( I'll let Game Grumps demonstrate ) just with a different set of cutesy characters. So if you're into puzzle games thats like tetris, but not, then Tetris Attack is fine

But since Cutesy fairy anime girls are my lifeforce - the localization kinda makes me mad.

There's been other Panel de Pon games since. Most are still in Japan, but it's format has be rehashed and 
most "Puzzle League" games have copied of Panel de Pon's format (Pokemon Puzzle League for example)

It's main character, Lip, has be present in other games in small doses. Super Smash Bros. has her wand for example
(just know that when you pick up this item, you're fighting with a magical girl wand in SSB, and that makes me happy)

The Japanese only "Captain Rainbow" game, a game where you play as a forgotten superhero, washed up on an island who has to help other forgotten Nintendo characters, has Lip as a character you can assist


I'd love for Lip and her franchise to have more of a presence in the U.S.

I think I remember reading about this. The cover art for Tetris Attack is stupid seeing how the title screen is filled with Yoshis. I bet a lot kids were confused when they plugged the game in.
