After about a year of waiting, this thing is finally available for viewing. It looked magical and majestic, but it's actually very down to Earth and modern-like.
Those are some Studio Ghibli tears right there.
I'm about a quarter into the movie and it's... strange. In particular it's apparent right away that the main girl (green haired Yoyo) is a lot more mature than her tiny form seems to suggest. It also seems like the other one, Nene, is largely irrelevant. Even when the two are together it's clear who the star is. Even design-wise it seems like more thought was put into Yoyo.
This is a plot-point that comes up about a quarter into the movie so I'm spoilering.
- Spoiler:
Ugh. NO. Let's just purge this kind of story from the genre already. And from everywhere. People getting punished for wishing for things is getting so stale.
And now to continue watching.
And now I've finished the movie. It wasn't bad. It had its share of heartwarming and heartbreaking moments and the story itself was meaningful enough.
And now for a continuation of my spoiler thing. This part comes near the end of the third quarter of the movie, this happens.
- Spoiler:
And I'm just like... "No. No. NO!" Basically what this movie is saying is that if you're given the chance to have a wish granted, you HAVE to use it for someone else otherwise it'll turn you into a monster. Because god forbid anyone ever use such a miraculous opportunity to improve their own situation.
What's next? An anime or movie where wishing for someone else's sake causes bad things to happen to that person? Enough already!
Overall I'd give it a 7/10. Nothing spectacular but also nothing terrible.
