Chrono Trigger Empty
PostSubject: Chrono Trigger   Chrono Trigger EmptyTue Mar 24, 2015 9:14 pm

Also known as the only RPG I play besides Pokemon.

Created by Squaresoft for the SNES, Chrono Trigger is a game about three... I guess teenagers, who through various hijinks end up traveling through time to save the world from a giant spiky bug monster.

I don't even remember why I started playing this game, I just know it happened back when I first started using the ZSnes Emulator. I remember beating it on the 4th of July, how appropriate.

One thing I really like about the game is that there aren't random encounter battles. Most of the time the enemies are right there on the map for you either purposely run into or try to avoid. Other times there are certain areas that if you try to pass you'll run into a mandatory battle, sometimes only once, sometimes every time you come back to that area.

One of the things that's really great about the game is it's music. The music ranges from upbeat to melancholic to heartwarming, and they're all a joy to listen to. I can't even think of a single track that I truly dislike.

There was a sequel for the Playstation called Chrono Cross, but most Trigger fans refuse to talk about that. From what I've read it's supremely convoluted, in its story and its battle mechanics. It also does some things that come off as huge no-nos to fans of the previous games, like vaguely hinting that all of the previous protagonists were killed off, and setting it up so that their noble world-saving actions only made things worse. Not fun.

Chrono Trigger was brought back a couple of times, as a port for the Playstation that included video cutscenes, and one for the DS which included those same cutscenes along with a handful of new features, including a bonus extra ending that tries to shoehorn it into the sequel.

I love Chrono Trigger.  It is one of my top 3 games.  (The other two being Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda)

This game also has an awesome soundtrack. I usually listen to the soundtrack at least twice a month.

I actually came here to make a thread about this game, not remembering that I had already done so ages ago.

Projared did a review of Chrono Trigger that was so beautiful I just had to pick up my copy of it. Now I'm really glad I recently re-gained an actual copy of it, it's worth having.

One thing he mentioned that I failed to mention in my post above is the characters. Whether you like their personalities or not, all of them have decent abilities and are useful in various ways. They have their ups and downs.

Like Marle for example. On her own she seems like a standard healing user, she has some of the most powerful HP restoring moves and her most powerful move is essentially the Chrono Trigger equivalent of a Max Revive from Pokemon. She's most often criticized for not having multi-range healing moves, meaning she can only heal one target at a time, but with the right partner and the right dual techs, some serious magic happens.

She also has one of the best techs in the game: Haste, which greatly speeds up the time between turns, letting you pull of non-stop barrages of attacks. Pretty good for a character with fairly weak attacking abilities and no third version of her offensive elemental ability. She and Lucca do get the incredibly power Antipode dual techs. Between that and Double Cure that she can use with Frog, this was the first time I beat the final boss without Crono on my team.

*fangirls because Chrono Trigger*
I started playing this game... Oh, about a month and a half ago? I think. Anyway, I'm playing the iPhone version, and I really like this game so far.. The story, characters, environments, battle system, music... All are really good. I'm right at the point where you get Ayla for the second time (thank goodness, I hate that I had to let her and Frog go temporarily), right after fighting Magus. My favorite characters so far are probably Marle and Frog, though all of them are both well written and good in battle. It's almost unreal how perfect this game is.
