MAL Page so I don't have to explain what the show's about.
I was initially put off from watching it because the concept of idol singers isn't something I really enjoy, but I'm four episodes in and it doesn't seem like her singing is really even the focus. She's sung the same song every episode, and it's the opening song. XD
So far I'm not sure what direction the show is to be going on. It seems like much of the focus is about Yuu (I keep trying to call her Mami, but that's just her transformed name, and really it's a stage name) getting roped into becoming an idol and trying to deal with this new double-life. Nothing is happening that really brings to mind cute witch or warrior shows at this point.
Yuu is quite a wily child she is. It's almost surprising to see a magical girl protagonist getting into mischief like faking sick and sneaking out of the house to have fun. Modern day Magical Girls like the Precure characters are so... squeaky clean, I can't recall them doing things like this.
I've actually put aside my desire for convenience and decided to watch this one on that Anime Sol site, rather than torrent it and watch it on the R4 or the tablet, since this is one MG show I can actually support.
So far I'm neither bored nor overly thrilled, but it is an okay show. I'll definitely keep watching.

My favorite~
I really love Creamy Mami, mostly as a character but it's definitely my favorite "pre-Sailor Moon" and "Magical Idol" show. It's just alot of fun, especially they way it just jumps from "Idol Hijinks" to "Surreal Fantasy Rescue Mission".
Like Link said, Yuu's a pretty rambunctious girl. But she's not afraid to be outspoken and do what she thinks is right. I also like alot of the side characters, especially Megumi her totally-not-based-on-Shinobu-from-Urusei-Yatsura rival.
Here, have the French dub opening as a little teaser of what I'm talking about

For those of you who live in the United States and Canada, a site called Anime Sols is trying to put out official DVDs. They're a legit site that has ties with the companies who actually own these shows.
It streams the episodes for free, but the DVDs are only put out if it reaches its pledge goal (like Kickstarter)
Currently they're on set 4 which contains the last 13 episodes and only 10 days are left to reach the goal of $18,000 dollars (the bare minimum required for releasing a DVD set).
Please consider checking out their site and making a pledge! Even a small one helps!!
It's been a dream of mine to get some 80's magical girl shows, please let Japan and anyone else watching this site know that American anime/magical girl fans care enough about the fun and history of the Genre to donate!
At the very least, please spread the word!!! I know we can do it!!
Also also, Anime Sols works with Studio Pierrot directly so shows like Tokyo Mew Mew, Sugar Sugar Rune, Magical Emi, Magical Fairy Pelsia and more could potentially be put on DVD for US release as well if the project is successful enough!

I finally got to episode 13, the infamous "Dark Mami" episode. I'd been kinda dreading this episode after reading a very interesting post about idols and contractual purity.
The episode itself wasn't as bad as I expected, but the "I'm not your doll" part is still pretty icky, especially considering Toshio is a teenage boy, one of the main characters and Yuu's friend.
It's weird because normally a teenage boy would WANT a girl to be scantily clad and posing seductively. Even shows like Idolmaster get plenty of porn drawn of them. So to have people wanting a girl to stay innocent for their own interests and STILL coming off as creepy... *Attacks self in confusion*
If Mami was an adult, I wouldn't consider it so icky to see stuff like this even though compared to what fanservice is in our time, this is pretty tame. But Yuu is like... nine years old and when she transforms into Creamy Mami, I can't imagine her being older than 16. And here Fake Mami is doing things that are clearly of sexual intent.

I remember that post when she posted it and I replied to it on her tumblr. I know it’s a bit of a lame excuse but Creamy Mami is very much a product of its time. Even more so because it’s not just trying to sell toys, it’s trying to sell Takako Ohta too. In a time when there was a GIGANTIC Idol boom. This also being a product from Japan in 1983. Not exactly a time and place known for equality in women’s rights. That same idol mentality still exists of course, in America too - how many young teenage heartthrobs have become open about their dating life and not gotten any kind of fan threats? But it still doesn't make it right. I'm glad they added that scene, because it gives something to reflect on I guess. On the other side though, Mami's also presented as a 16/17 year old girl. Call me a prude, but I don't think it's right to look or encourage nearly-naked 16 year olds (boy or girl), no matter how much they want to flaunt it for the camera. And I don't think I'm alone in that, So I can understand the outrage. A better way to handle it would be to villainize the photographer and not BizarroMami. ----- While we're on the subject of Toshio, I always thought his character was kindof interesting. He's older than Yuu, like about 13, but he only ever hangs out with Yuu (10) and Midori (13, but more child-like personality) so after watching the series twice I kindof sum up Toshio as a guy who acts cool and tough but is actually this big kid inside. He's pretty dorky. His affection for Mami is presented as a sincere and child-level crush (usually expressed via stalking her at every concert and shouting alot) . everything Mami does is the same thing Yuu would do, only with fluffier clothes and hair, and since Toshio is ultimately Yuu's future boyfriend, him falling for an older more "feminine" Yuu, makes sense. (sorry if thats a spoiler, i think it was pretty obvious) so when Evil-Mami comes around expressing herself I can understand his confusion. Watching someone you like (especially after you think you've figured them out) turn into a completely different person can be a little...heartbreaking. So I don't think him saying he "likes her innocent image" is really all that weird. ...the older dudes in that scene don't have an excuse tho XD
When I first started watching this show, I thought it would be better for Yuu to end up with Midori instead of Toshio.
But as of episode 22 I'm a bit disturbed by the idea. Midori is coming off as quite the creeper. He seems to be downright obsessed with her. The episode with the trumpet kid reminds me a lot of that episode of Adventure Time where Finn pretty much gets off on seeing Ice King and Flame Princess fight, and goes to great, disturbing lengths to make it happen again and again, which ends up costing him his relationship.
Also, I don't really like Megumi, but I can understand her situation. Like that post about contractual purity said, this show glosses over and romanticizes the idea of being an idol. In reality it's not as pretty as this show makes it seem. In this case, Megumi's dealing with the very real threat that a younger, prettier girl is gonna hijack her job.
Megumi works hard, struggling to achieve her place as an idol, and in comes this nobody who is little Ms. Perfect and everyone's eyes are on her.

Midori's crush on Yuu almost seems like he's not really into her as he is with the idea of being with a cute little loli-girl. His hearts in the right place most of the time, but still...
Link, do you remember that Doremi episode? where an older athletic skateboarding boy is under a spell that makes him fall in love with Doremi? and since Doremi's not gonna turn down a bishonen, she goes along with it and spends time with him and skates with him - which ends up as the worst idea ever for her clumsiness?
I kindof picture Midori x Yuu ending up in the same situation. Yeah it seems nice, but there's no common ground at all.
As for Megumi, I dont remember which episode it is, but there's one where we find out when Megumi younger, Shingo promised her alot of things about her career and that they were going to be the best together. - I think that's really where her anger stems from: She believed in Shingo and he ends up telling the same sort of things to Mami.
But at the start of the series, she seemed really uppity, so maybe stardom was going to her head too.
By the end of the show though, I really love Megumi. I like her weird "sempai but still rival" relationship with Mami.

I dunno if I mentioned this enough, but Yuu's mom is adorable.

I watched the first two episodes of this recently! It was really cute. I liked how, at least in the beginning, she was honestly scared and confused at the idea of being an idol... It wasn't like some other idol shows I've seen where the girls just kind of get into it naturally. Of course, I still need to watch more of it but I liked that.
Also, I was pretty surprised at the scene in the first episode where Yuu got spanked by her mom! I know it's from the 80's, and honestly, Yuu kinda deserved it, but... I was not expecting to see that at all!

I've wondering lately, was Ohta Takako really popular then? is there some charts information of that era? I know there were a lot of idol back then (just like there's now). Just curiosity :3

Uuuugh. Sorry guys. I watched the first ten minutes of the first episode, then dropped it. It was just sooo cheesy and silly. Plus all the underwear shots really turned me off, and I couldn't take anything seriously. It got kinda annoying. If you like it, that's okay. I feel Fancy Lala did this premise better, and it wasn't nearly as cheesy and silly. Plus, Yuu's voice is kinda annoying to me. This show's just not for me.

I'm glad someone mentioned the pantyshots. I haven't seen much 80's anime, but pretty much every clip I've seen had at least one completely unnecessary pantyshot. I try to tell myself it's because it's a kids' show, and kids think underwear is funny but... I know that's not why......
I will say, though, the slapstick was pretty crazy in episode 1, but it was non-existant in episodes 2 and 3, so I think the goofiness does wear off. But then, I've only seen three episodes, so it could come back at some point. Dunno.
