| Ok so there is running thing in Utena about the Rose Bride. Who ever wins the duels is engaged to the rose bride and there for has the power to bring revolution to the world. This being say what do you think it is about the rose bride that makes her so special? as we see later in the series she's only really needed to pull the sword from the engaged or to have the sword pulled from her. So what's her real purpose? |

| Are you talking about the Rose Brides in general or specifically about the Rose Bride (Anthy). In the case of Anthy specifically this isn't ambiguous at all because - Spoiler for those who haven't seen the series all the way through.:
Anthy is the witch whose magic allows the swords to exist and the duels to take place at all
which is, you know, pretty important to the overall plot of the series. |

| but the in the series she isn't the only one who can do this. We see others doing this as well, I guess what i'm getting at is why is this witch there and why are the duels taking place? Yes i know the series says something about brining revolution to the world but that's not what i'm getting at. I want to know why you think this is, not really what the canon says, since i'm familiar with the canon already. but just saying she's the witch that makes the duels happen more or less what uncovered in the movie and there are some that don't count the movie in with the rest of the series. No it has been a bit since i sat down and watched the show, but what i want to know is not WHO but WHY and What is her purpose according to you. |

| I always thought about it too really spoilers for the people who are in the middle of watching it - Spoiler:
looking at the other "rose brides" (Kozue for Miki, Shiori for Ruka, Ruka for Juri, Touga for Nanami, Saionji for Touga, and lastly Utena for Akio) In their respective episodes, the rose bride is a motivator for the duelist to continue their ideal way of life (sometimes vise versa but thats debatable I'm sure). But in all of these cases, either the duelist or the rose bride believes that their partnership is eternal - only to have that ideal end in some form. A power struggle is ultimately each couples demise.
When the series ends, Anthy and Utena only seek partnership together because they've cast off their perceptions of being "Bride and Groom" to each other and just view each other as people. Anthy no longer has magic and Utena is no longer a prince and they're able to find contentment with just that.
I hope that made sense? XD |
