Out of the whole genre that are a lot of people who are dead set against magical boys. They're like boys can't be magical!!!!! That's what boys shows are for!!
I just sit there and
Then I'm like there are magical boys:
These are the best examples I can think of. XD
I understand why people are against it because magical girls shows are meant to empower girls. But girls can feel empower by a male character! Also I guess they feel like boys will take away the show from the girls?
I don't see how that can happen. Shugo Chara does a good balancing the characters. Yeah at times the anime can drag, but in the manga the characters are very well written. At the end of the day Amu is the main character and no one steals that spotlight from her.
Thoughts? Should boys stay out the magic light? Or not?

When I think of magical boys, i think of a character a little more feminine and in nice frilly clothes
a shoujo-styled bishonen, I guess, that uses magic
I don't visualize a character like Luffy from One Piece. which is what people who say "you want magical boys - go watch shonen!" seem to visualize :/ nor is that what i want out of a "magical boy" show
Magical girl shows aren't just about empowering girls, they're also about indulging in their fantasies.
Maybe i'm just a weird lady, but i like pretty anime boys in fancy outfits dealing with stupid soap opera love drama. the more shows that give me that the better. mixing in the magical girl tropes like transformations and poses would just make it better.
i dunno how to explain it, but it's a specific kind of appeal. like moe for girls?
and shonen anime will never give me that. ever.
so yeah. i'm all for magical boy shows.

Well there is one genre where magical boys could really flourish; reverse harems (specifically Kamigami no Asobi) where the harem is populated with magical boys, transformations and all. And while a more traditional style show featuring magical boys as opposed to magical girls could be interesting, there doesn't seem to be any real demand for that sort of thing. Mahou shoujo are still just kid stuff or adult mens' entertainment.

It appears I must stand corrected. It did happen.

Of course the mascot has an annoying old man's voice. >.>
It looks interesting, but I have a feeling it will be that Swimming Anime. I also have a feeling I'll hate that blond hair kid. The only anime character that I like that had the similar personality was Honey from Ouran High School Host Club.

One of the more understandable criticisms of this show tumblr refers to as "Magical Boytoys" is that the show seems to be doing almost a parody. Just looking at the trailer you can tell this is being played as a silly idea and the show's not taking any of this seriously.
When people say they want magical boys, I doubt most of them are thinking "Take all of the frilly and girly, cutesy and colorful things in magical girl shows, and swap the genders." Of course it's gonna look ridiculous, and the show knows it.
Instead they could do something like this or this. It could still be a show targeted toward girls, it could still be a cute, fun show starring male protagonists, it just needs to show a little dignity and at least try to do an actual thing with the genre instead of just acting like it's all a big joke.

Actually, no, that is exactlywhat I want.
you have no idea how excited I am to watch that show. I just wish their outfits were a tweaked a bit.

Maybe I worded that badly. Tadase from Shugo Chara is a good example, helped by the fact that he's in a girl targeted MG show. Retain all of the magic and fluff but with male characters.
Instead what we seem to be getting is blatant fujoshi bait trying to leech off of the success of Free while playing the whole idea of magical boys as a joke.

While I am going into this show with open mind I do realize it's not going to be the magical boy show that I want. It's going to be parody with Free! style boys. A true magical boy show would have characters be like characters from Shugo Chara and Cardcaptor Sakura. Syaoran from CCS is the best written male character from a magical girl series. At least in my opinion. I would love to have a series with a character like him in it. Heck I would be happy to see more shows like shugo chara where boys and girls fight together with magical powers.

Well yeah, I do wish it was being played for real and not just a parody. But I'll take what I can get. (Beggars cant be choosers and all that)
Honestly it reminds me more of the "Uta no Prince-sama" boys than Free
I would also take an entire show of just like 5 Tadases from Shugo Chara
