| MAL link, as always!
So, it's recently come to my attention that this series is apparently very hated. I discovered this series years ago, and I have attempted many times to get into it, but for some reason I've never been able to. I recently started reading the manga, and watching a bit of the anime, though.
And from what I've seen so far... I don't see what's that bad about it? It seems like a typical magical girl series to me! The "singing to defeat enemies" thing is a little silly but... Honestly, it kind of works here since they're mermaids. The music isn't really that bad, either. The manga is also not that bad -- kind of generic and forgettable, but not really anything hate-worthy.
Obviously I'm really early into the series, so there's probably still time for it to get worse. Does anyone know why this series is so widely hated? Because I'm really curious... |

| Well,so as not to spoil you, One of the things, I've seen:
-Luchia, She's very bratty in some cases, also all the series is LuchiaxKaito and the others getting hooked up.
-The "Sing" to death.
-The mood swing and apparently to them, the series has no plot
Mainly I'm guessing it's the "Sailor Moon ripoff" and too much love.
In what's personal, I like it. I have the GBA roms in my psp, love to hear Luchia sing. When you're into it, I'll put more reasons that I've seen. |

| I just don't like it because I find the characters very shallow and that their only motivation is their potential romance (Lucia and Hanon especially)
I just have experience with Manga and a few episodes of the anime - but I just wasn't impressed with what I saw - the manga especially is so clunky and confusing to read through. |

| I don't hate it. I have the manga. But the characters aren't that like-able either. I did watch the anime and I liked the singing voices. |

| I had a bit of difficulty trying to read the manga online -- I'm not fond of the scanlation that's floating around on manga sites -- but I've had no problems reading the Del Ray version. After watching eight episodes of the anime, I'm starting to see why it's disliked. Particularly after episode six... - Spoiler:
I really hated how Kaito forced a kiss on Lucia after she said something he didn't like... And the narrative treated her like the villain for slapping him. And after he helps her out later in the episode, she thanks him, but he never once apologizes for what he did... That really just rubbed me the wrong way.
I definitely prefer the manga version for this series, though, especially since you don't have to hear the same song every chapter. |

| Welp. I made it fourteen episodes in before finally deciding to drop the anime. It started out pretty decent, but as the episodes went on, more and more problems began to show up until I just couldn't stand it anymore. - Spoiler:
The biggest reason why I dropped this was the character Hanon -- I absolutely couldn't stand her. Her crush on Mitsuki-sensei (or should I say "Tarou-chaaaan"...) was just nauseating, especially because it wasn't exactly portrayed in an innocent way. It just creeped me out every time it was brought up.
The "sing to death" thing did start to get aggravating. It made sense at first, since they're mermaids and all, but having episode after episode where the villains show up and get defeated with the same song over and over... And they rarely ever fought back, for the most part, they just stood there, listened to the song, and then left. This became especially apparent in episode 13, when the big bad Gaito showed up, and even he didn't do anything to defend against the mermaid's song. It was absolutely ridiculous.
It's really a shame, because the show has adorable character designs and a really neat concept. But I just can't stand to watch any more of it. I am going to continue reading the manga, though -- the biggest problems I had with the anime are much less noticeable in the manga, and I do want to see how this series ends. |

| UGH. JUST UGH.
I finally got around to reading the manga and... Yes, I can DEFINITELY see why this series is so hated.
The biggest problem I had with the manga is something that, apparently, isn't as present in the anime? And that's the sheer amount of ecchi/fanservice that was present in what's apparently a kid's series. I get it, Japan has a different idea as to what's appropriate for children, but... There were so many sex jokes, there were times when I wondered who the actual demographic for the manga even was. I wouldn't mind if it was seinen, but when you pair the amount of sexuality with the childish story and character designs, it becomes... Ewwww.
Besides that, though... I think it's such a shame, because the whole concept of mermaids fighting with song based powers has so much potential. :/ |

| I never saw the appeal to this series. Magical girl mermaids sound awesome, but their powers through song seemed lame to me. lol |

| I think it's just the way it was done - it would've been cool if they had water based powers, and maybe some sound based attacks? I'm thinking of Pokemon, like the move Hyper Voice and Sing. But instead, it's just like... They sing the same song over and over and the enemies are instantly defeated. They don't even fight back! They're just like "OH NOES I HATE JPOP" and disappear lol. |

| Now that would be cool. I guess singing Jpop music would make them money seeing how anime is all about the merchandise. |

| I actually like Mermaid Melody and thought that it's a very good series too, plus it's very dfferent from other Magical Girl anime and manga series that I've seen and/or read before. I especially love the Mermaid theme of the series since I am a huge fan of Mermaids and other mythical creatures. Even though I like the series, I have to agree with a lot of people that it would have been nice if the Mermaid Princesses have water based powers as well in order for them to defeat their enemies and not just sing so that it can believable. |
