Than Kyubey was totally wasting his time.

Recent work has cast some doubt on the heat death hypothesis and the applicability of any simple thermodynamic model to the universe in general. 


Although entropy does increase in the model of an expanding universe, the maximum possible entropy rises much more rapidly, moving the universe further from the heat death with time, not closer.


I can't pretend to understand how this entropy bizz works (the creators of this show barely understand themselves) but if what this says is correct, then all I can say is "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH".


It's amazing how ten minutes on Wikipedia can teach you more about something than an entire anime based on it.

Okay, let me see if I have a grasp on the concept of Entropy well enough.

According to this concept, the universe burns energy doing things like keeping the sun going. The burned away energy becomes unusable. Eventually the universe would supposedly die out because of this.

Kyubey's goal in Madoka Magica is to sacrifice magical girls in order to pump great quantities of energy into the universe in order to prevent this "heat death".

But if that line from the Wikipedia article is correct, that means all of Kyubey's actions were pointless.

So... Universe is not losing energy and dieing cold, which is Kyubey tried to avoid, but all the opposite?
