Taking advantage of the new forum set-up, why not?

So there's only one episode of this series out so far and I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else is going to?  I'm really excited about this because it uses similar tropes to Revolutionary Girl Utena and that's probably one of my favorite MG animes (except maybe Panty and Stocking, but they're so different it's kind of hard to compare them).  But yeah.

Sword wielding magical girl fights an oppressive student council while being awesome.
Is anyone else excited about this?

I've seen the first episode.  It looks like it'll be fun since everything is so far out in the ridiculous category.  I also love Ryuko so far.  I'm not so into the super revealing battle outfit, but I can ignore it if I continue to watch it.

It's not really "magical" enough as the world has a system where fibers grant you super powers? Yea.

I was sort-of late into the wagon but I caught up recently. It's the kind of anime if you like Trigger's over-the-top stuff.. Except that this one has a lead (masculine) female instead of a male. The "rival" is also female to balance it out, and it's surprising that it goes by so fast I don't even frigging care about the "fanservice"! The icing for the show is also a metaphor for a teen girl's puberty and such... But I'm sure many of you had seen the "feminist" chart already.

But it's still over the top, and not everyone will like it. But hey... Even Ryuko hates being dressed like that at first, so I feel her sympathy.

To excuse as a "magical girl" trope? Nonon's transformation! The cute yet deadly beloved Elite Four members and knew Satsuki since preschool! Her "mecha" is also the best Goku Uniform skill she has, and man she's crazy for Satsuki... (Yes I ship them now.)

I am watching the English dub on Toonami. Right now, I am in episode 20. It reminds me of Panty and Stocking meets Gurren Lagann.

At first, I was not into the series until when the series really picked up between episodes 13 and 18. Ryuko is one of the best magical girl characters. I really like her. The Elite Four are awesome. This series has so many unexpected twists and turns. I do not care about the fanservice too. It is still enjoyable to me.

My friend and I watched an episode of this show on Toonami a few weekends back. We had a fun time making fun of it. Not the dub. The voices sound good. Just the show itself. It's a bit strange and I had no idea it was magical girl show until I looked it up on the internet.

I just don't get how it's a magical girl show? I mean I'm all for edgy and dark magical girl shows if the plot is good. But they need to feel like a magical girl show. If that makes sense.

I also didn't like art designs of the characters.

There are debates online if Kill la Kill is a magical girl or not. I think it is, but at the same time, I do not think it is.

Is it because they transform into their outfits? If that's the case than Power Rangers is a magical series. LOL

Honestly I don't care if it's called a magical girl show. If people like to think then all power to them. But me personally it's not a magical girl show. I don't get that vibe from it. Just looks like an action show to me.

It does have a lot of shonen influences especially the action scenes. And yes, Power Rangers is a magical series (just kidding).

I don't think of it as a magical girl show myself, it reminds me old kung-fu movies (where the newcomer has to beat 4 masters + the boss and revenge is usually the motivation) and cheesy over the top action flicks.

Ryuko's a young girl wielding a strange-power, so in the basic sense, she is a magical girl character

but over all, it just isn't a magical girl show. There's no duel-identity, secrets, and the world itself treats the power clothes as if it's just a normal thing to have. I think it wasn't on Trigger's agenda at all to make this a magical girl show

I think the only thing that would make me reconsider is if Trigger said "yeah, we wanted to do our own unique take on magical girls"
