Fallen From Grace? Empty
PostSubject: Fallen From Grace?   Fallen From Grace? EmptySun Nov 08, 2015 4:40 pm

It's been four years now since the original Madoka anime aired and I'm honestly kinda surprised by how little staying power it seems to have had. What little I see people talking about it on sites like MyAnimeList, 4Chan and Tumblr are almost always bashing it, outside of specific groups like the irrational "Homura did nothing wrong" camps who don't treat the phrase like a joke.

I'm sure Rebellion helped, as I've seen a fair amount of people turn on the series, and Homura as a character, because of it.

It could just be a massive backlash against the show's initial hype of course. The "It's popular, now it sucks" mentality that spreads throughout anime fans.

Part of me isn't surprised, since the show relied heavily on misleading the audience and throwing shock value in their faces every episode. Now that the show is so well known and Urobuchi is a household name, most reactions from new viewers are basically "It's not as dark as people said it was."

Of course the show's name also pops up whenever a new magical girl show that's not Precure appears. As the responses of that magical girl survival game shows, a lot of people are getting fed up with the recent trend of "magical girls gone edgy" that many blame squarely on Madoka, as the few darker shows that aired before it were mostly obscure and aired several years before. Now all of a sudden we're getting edgy magical girls left and right and people want to claim that Madoka's success wasn't an inspiration for it?

It's been two years since Rebellion Story released and aside from spinoff manga no one cares about they haven't yet announced a new big Madoka related project. I'm honestly a bit surprised considering how quickly they threw the recap movies out the door, just a few months after the TV show ended.

Considering the claims that Urobuchi wants to be done with the series, I think it's safe to say the few people hoping for a sequel that will fix everything wrong with Rebellion will be left hanging.

I still enjoy PMMM for what it is, and though I like Rebellion ok - I admit I'm not in any rush to buy it like I was the series.

People move on to the next shiny thing - that's inevitable, especially on sites like MAL (and the like) where the next new thing is always in your face -  but I think PMMM still has a staying power with critics and casual fans. PMMM cosplays and merchandise certainly haven't slown down and someone must still be buying those Kirara Magica Time manga magazines otherwise they wouldn't print them.

You can only keep talking about the same 12 episodes + movie for so long before you start sounding like a broken record. I love Revolutionary Girl Utena & Princess Tutu, every frame of it, with all my tiny human soul but I'm not going to constantly talk about it to everyone I meet all the time waiting for that sequel that wont happen. You gotta move on.

Actually, over watching something is a REALLLLY easy way to make you hate something. Like I used to really like Pixar's the Bug's Life movie. But after one week of babysitting tiny cousins with no other movie to watch - I can't stand to watch it anymore. Why do you think everyone hates the "Let it Go" song from Frozen now?

There's a lot of anime fans we don't see online, like fans who just watch Netflix or whatever they hear about from a friend who don't know who Urobuchi or Shinbo is or what Morning Rescue is (does anyone remember that meme?) that we don't see in this equation.

But I think PMMM has a certain look and experience to it that stays in people's memory. It's already been parodied to heck & back. I think 10 years from now when people think "what was good in 2011?" it'll be on someone's top 10 lists for sure.

As for "Magical Girls: Hunger Games edition" or whatever you like to call it, the novels have been going since 2012, so it's not like it's new? but I think in its case PMMM was a direct influence as to why it was published. But I haven't read it and we haven't even gotten a trailer - so that's probably an unfair claim to make.

As long as it's not like the 2000s with tons of lazy MG parody fanservice shows then tha--

*sigh* Adult-aimed magical girl shows just can't find a happy median. (Houkago no Pleiades was pretty nice though.)

Like Belle said you can only talk about one series for so long. Sure there are people who hate Madoka, but there are many people who still love it. My friend recently watched it and loves it. She is now buying figures. I find it odd because magical girls were never really her thing.

As for me I never saw the appeal to the series. I thought the characters were flat and boring. However I don't hate it or the people who like it. I also don't hate it for being popular. I think it's stupid to hate something because it's so popular.

PostSubject: Re: Fallen From Grace?   Fallen From Grace? EmptyMon Nov 09, 2015 10:31 am

I'm not sure. On one hand, there's been no new anime related content for this series since Rebellion, and it gets boring talking about the same thing over and over. But on the other hand, there's still plenty of PMMM related manga coming out, and no one seems to be talking about that, so I do think that the series in general has just fallen out of favor. Unless, of course, manga is just THAT unpopular, LOL.

Plus, with the massive amount of hate that PMMM gets nowadays, I imagine that there are also newer fans who are just scared to talk about what they liked about the series, since it gets analyzed and nitpicked to death by the hatedom. They don't really want to get into a debate, so they just kind of keep quiet about the whole thing.

Also, I do think the shock factor thing could be something to do with it... I first discovered this series long after Rebellion came out, and while I didn't know EXACTLY what happens when I started watching it, I knew before I picked it up that it was a dark series where bad things happen to the protagonists. So when I did finally watch it, my reaction was very different to someone who was watching this when it was first airing. Now, I ended up liking the series, but I can see how someone else might watch it and go "THIS is what all the fuss was about?". And another thing, for the people who were watching it when it first aired... A lot of people seem to think that if something can shock you, that automatically makes it good. That's why shows like Family Guy are so popular here in the States. Laugh So, I bet a good portion of people who were initially shocked were probably impressed. When you know what to expect before watching it, you probably will go in with a lot higher expectations.
