I'm not really sure what it's about but from what I've read each season of Jewelpet is a an entirely separate universe. And the whole thing just looks like unfiltered diabetes.
I have heard that the second season, Jewelpet Tinkle/Twinkle/Whatever is the most like a magical girl show (and also has the darkest/most serious elements). From what I've read on TV Tropes seasons after downplay the magical girl factor. It does still seem like a cute witch series, only the witches are fluffy animal people.
Someone who's seen this can feel free to chime in.

I've seen a few episodes of Tinkle, and yes that show is very much a magical girl.
I would argue that it's not so much the girls that are magic, but the Jewelpets themselves. in each season they come from a magical land and can use magic to some degree. IRL Sanrio often depicts the jewelpets like this at their parks and events
note the witch hat and cape. So yeah, since the jewelpets are the main characters and attraction of the show and they also use magic and are (for the most part) girls. So it counts to me.
I think people alot of people just don't realize that magical girls aren't all about fighting and don't know how to categorize show where its just girls hanging out at the magic school or magically running a cafe after class (which I think is what Happiness is about, i only saw episode 1 raw)
I admit i need to watch more of it, but I think it counts.

*Update* So I watched the first episode of Jewelpet Sunshine (Season 3) and omigod ya know that crying dolphin gif that people use on tumblr (or any other site really)
Spoiler:
THAT'S FROM THIS SHOW
...i feel like i've solved a great mystery that any jewelpet fan already knows.
oh and it's also pretty magical girl-ish. It's alot more subtle than the Tinkle season, but its there.
Alot of the Jewelpet seasons seem to be based around collecting things ala Cardcaptor Sakura (or heck, the first season of jewelpet sounds like the makings of really girly pokemon show) and then using the magic of the jewelpets to protect it.
One thing I've noticed about Jewelpet is that it seems really surreal and it just sort of wallows around in it like its everyday for comedic. It's like the writers were like "lets make this talking sanrio cat mix drinks for every one then someone will push her into a lake full of jello and she'll make a stupid reaction face" "..but why?" "because we can! its a cartoon, who gives a hoot!"
it's like Sanrio doesn't want to give up their prime-time Sunday morning time-slot for nothing, so they just let the writers do whatever.

Jewelpet Tinkle is unambiguously a magical girl show. Full of girls (and boys!) with magical animal companions learning about magic and friendship and romance and whatnot. But honestly out of the three Jewelpet series I'm familiar with (Tinkle, Kira Deco, and Happiness) I think it's the weakest. I don't regret watching it or anything though, and it was pretty emotional at parts.
Kira Deco and Happiness have some magical girl elements in that episodes do tend to culminate in the characters (as in, the Jewelpet characters, not the human ones) using magic (complete with stock animation) to solve (or at least try to solve) whatever problem the episode is about like in Ojamajo Doremi or similar, albeit with much zanier stuff going on. The main draw of the series though is in its fast-paced, zany, slapstick-y humor (like... Kira Deco had the director and writer from Milky Holmes). Well, that and the Jewelpets themselves, since they're all very cute and likable.
I think the series (any of them, really) is absolutely worth watching, though as far as I know there aren't a whole lot of fans of any of the Jewelpet series besides maybe Tinkle, so I guess maybe it's not a very popular opinion.

Speaking of Jewelpet (can this just become the official Jewelpet thread XD)
A new series is starting this April
Lady Jewelpet
Looks like they're going back to some traditional magical girl roots

The story centers around Monona, a girl who attended the wedding ceremony of her big brother whom she adores. However, she is whisked away by a cute rabbit-shaped Jewelpet Ruby, and before she knew it, she is in a Jewelpalace where potential candidates to become a Lady have gathered. "Momona was selected by Ruby as the best female Ladyjewel candidate for the Queen of Jewelland!?"

Whoa. That pink haired girl. I think we've reached the Smile Precure point in Jewelpet. Where the character designs become super extravagant and ridiculous. I thought those were just Mickey Mouse ears, but upon further inspection they seem to be completely round!
At least Tomoyo's granddaughter looks normal enough.

Huh. I really like those character designs, though they feel... not Jewelpetty? I dunno. Premise could be good, but obviously we'll have to wait and see to figure out where they're actually going with it. Either way, more Jewelpet is always welcome.
Hopefully this time we don't have the OP and ED be the same song... >.>

I thought they were channeling Minnie Mouse too with that red bow and ears.
But then I remembered this is Sanrio, so the bow's probably supposed to be like Hello Kitty
I think it's kindof strange that (atleast from what I've seen) there's not more sanrio character cameos. Even stranger is that Jewelpet is pretty much nowhere to be found in the American Sanrio stores. I mean, this is obviously one of their big cash cow brands, why aren't they trying to internationalize it a bit.
I remember hearing that it was to avoid lawsuits/competition from Webkins (because at first, Jewelpets were plush toys that you bought-entered in codes and played with online-similar to Webkins). that or they can't trademark the names (basic gemstone names like "Ruby" are pretty much a pain in the butt to trademark, especially for toys)
or maybe they just want a TV deal that they cant get because American stations dont want to deal with girl shows and/or a licensed cartoon. the reasons are pretty endless.

Tumblr: Lady Jewelpet? That title makes the men in the fandom feel excluded!
It looks cute, but considering I don't know the first thing about Jewelpet I can't really say whether I think it'll be good or bad. I still haven't gotten around to watching any of the other seasons.

Jewelpet Tinkle's OP had a line that was something like "Every girl in the whole world is a unique jewel" or something, and each episode ended with someone saying something along the lines of "Every girl is a great magician."
I always thought it was really strange, especially since there were boys who used magic in the show.

Okay this is kind of hilarious.
I don't know which season it is, but I'm definitely interested in watching one of them, either Tinkle of Happiness for now. If I like it I'll branch out into others. Hopefully it won't turn into a whirlwind of seasons like Precure.

Jewelpets is adorable! My boyfriend is actually watching it right now. Me, though, I can't watch stuff like this... It's too cute. It's not that I don't like cute stuff -- I love it! But... If something is THAT adorable, I have a tendency to start crying when I watch it, because I can't handle how sweet it is. I once cried watching Onegai My Melody because there was an episode where they showed My Melo's family and... All those cute bunnies were just too much for my heart to take. OTL
